This is a photo Blog that I like to call "Wisconsin Portrait."

My life as a photojournalist for the Wisconsin State Journal can be exciting and fast paced, with news and sports assignments making up a large part of my  professional working life. As a photographer that is not enough.

My job as a professional observer has opened my eyes to many things around me. I can't drive down a street or take a walk, without seeing as a photographer.

Most of the pictures I want to feature here are snapshots around the state.  Hopefully showing you these pictures will open your eyes to things you may see everyday, but not really look at.

    All comments are welcome.

92nd PGA Championship-Whistling Straits

The Wisconsin State Journal sent me to Kohler, Wisconsin to cover the 92nd PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. This is the second time is six years that the event was held here, and it is the second time I have covered it for the State Journal.

As a photographer, it is not an easy to cover the tournament at this venue. Besides a credential, most photographers and some reporters are given an brown arm band which allows you inside the ropes. The advantages of this is that you don’t have to fight the crowds, the disadvantages are that you are required to be one arm length of the rope.

The ropes are usually on the edge of the fairways which in this case means huge hills and bunkers. After the players tee off they walk down the middle of the fairways while the photographers follow up and down the side hills like a bunch of billy goats. Needless to say with the heat and humidity, it was harder this year than it was six years ago. On the positive side, I only fell down two hills this year.

Wisconsin State Journal Favorite Photos For July 2010

Kind of a slow month for photos that I like, but I did find a few to post from July. There was the setup for Rhythm & Booms and the Dane County Fair, plus photos from a Sunday story on the cleanup effort at Old World Wisconsin near Eagle, Wisconsin.

Old World Wisconsin, near Eagle, the state largest historical site is still recovering from a tornado that hit Monday June 21. The 500 plus acre site lost over 2500 red pine trees and there was damage to some of the historical buildings. The clean up was photographed Tuesday July 6, 2010. Steve Apps-Wisconsin State Journal.

School of Arts Photo Class

Last week I had a chance to recharge my batteries while teaching a photo class at the School of the Arts at Rhinelander (Wisconsin). This was the tenth year that I have been teaching a class, and the biggest thing I have noticed is that the quality of the photos produced by the students has been getting better over the years. The changes in the digital camera could have something to do with it, but I like to think it is the instruction. Ok, it is probably the cameras.

I’ve included some of the photos I shot while out on daily shooting assignments during the week. Those locations included the Logging Museum Complex in Rhinelander, a family owned wildlife park in Minocqua, and the downtown area of Rhinelander.
